Camels are masters of the art of survival. They can go for up to ten months without a drop of water, then drink 200 liters in only 15 minutes, while their humps store fat to keep hunger at bay. But there’s much more to them than that. Domesticated in Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter for more than 5,000 years, they initiated international trade. Without them the great overland silk and spice routes would never have been born. Today their bedouin owners treasure them like their own children, and bemoan that their upkeep is so much more expensive!
Luckily for camels, specialized Saudi camel hospitals treat them for free; victory brings great honour to Turkish camel owners in the 2,000-year-old sport of camel wrestling; Mongolia’s Bactrian camels will soon be priceless because they drink salt water; and Australia’s wild camels can escape culling by being reimported to Saudi Arabia - to win millions camel racing!
