This program is part of the American Experience series, produced by PBS. This episode focuses on an important religious figure during the Great Depression. Father Charles Coughlin’s home parish was in Michigan, but the entire country became his pulpit. His popular radio show was broadcast throughout the land during the hard economic times of the 1930s. Preaching a brand of salvation based on God’s grace and socioeconomic reform, Father Coughlin’s message reached millions of attentive listeners. Archival clips from his broadcasts, as well as photographs and personal recollections, tell the story of one of the most revered and influential men of the cloth in American history.
